From Assembly Lines to Intelligent Ecosystems: The Evolution of Industrial Engineering in the 21st Century

Industrial engineering, once rooted in the precise calculations of time-and-motion studies and the brute rationality of the assembly line, has metamorphosed into a dynamic discipline at the intersection of systems thinking, sustainability, artificial intelligence, and human-centered design. Today, industrial engineers are not just concerned with efficiency – they are architects of resilient value chains, stewards of environmental accountability, and strategic thinkers navigating the complexity of globalized production.

At its core, industrial engineering is the optimization of integrated systems involving people, materials, information, equipment, and energy. However, recent research has radically expanded the scope of this optimization.
