Lesson Plan: The Rise and Decline of the Qing Dynasty (Kangxi to Jiaqing)

Objective:

Students will understand the key events, policies, and challenges from the Kangxi to the Jiaqing emperors of the Qing dynasty and reflect on the lessons this period holds for governance, leadership, and cultural shifts.

Lesson Duration:

1.5 – 2 hours (can be split into two classes)

Materials Needed:

• Projector for YouTube videos

• Printed primary sources (excerpts from Kangxi’s Sacred Edict, Qianlong’s speeches, and accounts of Jiaqing’s rule)

• Group discussion handouts

• Digital access to videos and articles for homework

Part 1: Introduction to the Qing Dynasty (15 minutes)

• Activity: Begin with a short storytelling session about the early days of the Qing dynasty, focusing on the transition from the Ming to the Qing under the Shunzhi Emperor. Introduce the Kangxi Emperor as one of the longest-reigning and most influential rulers.
